I stopped during a training run to help push a stalled vehicle off the road into a parking lot while an older gentleman steered. When running my soul is broken down to very basics "move forward/survive" and "do good." There isn't room for much else with all the mental, physical, and emotional stress. What I meant by "doubly true" is that whereas most churchgoers simply tone down their vices on Sunday, many ultrarunners go the extra step of spending the day loving and caring for others. bf in azhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11476386558506619615noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688489234891824827.post-32813372892720975572012-12-13T08:09:46.958-07:002012-12-13T08:09:46.958-07:00"Pacing is pure service. It means tending to a runner's physical and emotional needs at a time of weakness, with no reward,..."

I have known quite a few people who have done the pacing duty--all thought it a rewarding thing to do. There have been friendships built or just the lessons learned from that long run during the night, but "no reward" misses the mark.

"Maybe it's all pointless, but at the very least it's good practice for how we should be behaving in our everyday lives. It's like how people say that you should behave the other six days the way you behave on Sunday. For the ultrarunning community, I'd say that's doubly true."

This "doubly true" part, is that because folks who run ultramarathons are twice as sinful? What left you feeling this way?

I enjoyed the story, very well done, except for these two parts--pacing, volunteering, or crewing are rewarding to most... and I don't think folks who run ultras are any worse (or better) on weekends than most other groups.Jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02905249381053895518noreply@blogger.com
